Cliveden House is one of those classic English locations where the history is so rich that it is etched into the very fabric of the building itself. The house has seen tragedy, triumph and turpitude that shook the very core the British establishment. Resting in the Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire, the grand mansion overlooks the banks of the River Thames. With the original house built in 1666 and the present day incarnation built in 1851; it is steeped in history. It has been the home too royalty and the upper echelons of British Society. It has also become synonymous with intrigue and scandal having been the backdrop to the Cold War ‘Profumo Affair’ of 1961.

Today the house is split into a National Trust property and very grand and luxurious hotel. I was given a commission to visit the location and bring it to life in some capacity – to hunt the ghosts that haunt its corridors and try to get a whiff of the scandals that still echo through the generations. My approach to these type of commissions is to always trust my gut and react instinctively to what I see, but also to eek out, and if necessary create, images that speak to those past echos.
