Colne Valley Viaduct
Photographing the construction of the UK’s longest rail bridge
The Colne Valley Viaduct, a mammoth undertaking in engineering which forms part of the new High Speed (HS2) rail line connecting London to Birmingham. I was tasked with photographing this feat of engineering on a soggy whistle-stop tour back in April for the Sunday Times Magazine. There’s never enough times to do justice to any of it when you are shooting like this and you find yourself constantly running to catch up with the ‘group’ (there’s always a group because invariably you need to be escorted around such work sites – complete with being dressed in full PPE).
Understandably those that have worked on the project are very proud of it – for many it will be their lifes big project has it has taken years to complete. The trains will eventually travel across the bridge at 200mph, it is the longest rail bridge in Britain. 116,000 tonnes in weight and made of 57 individually cast spans it is really quite remarkable to see.
