I was delighted to be asked by the team at the Sunday Times Magazine to photograph Jame Daunt, founder of Daunt Books, CEO of Waterstones and some would say, the saviour of Barnes and Noble bookshops. I photographed James at the well known Daunt Books store on Marylebone High Street, working between the droves of tourists that pop in to get a photo of the now ‘insta-famous’ arched ceiling. We didn’t have long with the man himself but did have some time to recce the space and arrange the furniture a little bit before he came in. Once I saw the window it was a bit of a no-brainer; I had to position and light him in a way that really played into the idea of the saviour, and therefore to lean into the visual cues from history of iconography and saints.
