Palio

Amongst the Tuscan hills of central Italy, lies the medieval city of Siena, and twice a year within it’s stone walls and warren of cobbled streets a battle takes place, a battle of man and beast pitted against one another, or to give it it’s proper title; the Palio. This historical event dates back to the medieval period and is more than just a horse race; it acts as a competition between the city’s wards or contrade. Each participating horse represents a contrada, and the race is filled with pageantry and communal pride. The event is ingrained in the cultural identity of Siena, with the elaborate rituals and intense competition reflecting the city’s rich history and traditions, it is far more than just a horse race.
